This is @maya. She holds two world records. And this wave is what she claimed to be the best backhand barrel of her life.
A year ago today, I swam the craziest waves I’ve ever witnessed. On top of that, a friend had me shooting a film project with his $50k camera setup. What came from that day was a lot more than I can express in an instagram caption.
As far as the digital world goes, this camera and wave marked a technological milestone for me. Shooting at 8k resolution allowed a frame grab to be taken and printed in the prestigious @whitehorsesmag issue 42. With the use of 180-degree shutter angle, the video maintained a motion blur that created the slow-shutter effect with the rain drops for the grab. The result was both a timeless video and printable photo that I’ll cherish indefinitely.

Indo’s first big swell of 2023 and she came in hard. SSW 9.7ft @ 16 sec and flutters of wet season winds lit this right-hand slab up. Heaviest wave in Bali and this was the heaviest swim in Bali for me as well. I only had about 15 minutes of shooting until the lip of a wave took both my fins clean off my feet (no leashes, they become anchors). I was fortunate to be able to swim in without detonation.
Stoked I at least bagged a couple gems and a nice link up with @koldo.illumbe. He charged hard that day and will have some clips for his upcoming edit to show for it. Cheers to all the other chargers and filmers. That was a hell of a start to the 2023 season and for mid-April it’s one for the books.
